Parkin, the largest provider of paid public parking facilities and services in Dubai, has launched “Spots for Shops,” a campaign that allows drivers to validate parking fees through purchases at neighbourhood businesses, aiming to increase footfall and visibility for small retailers.
The initiative enables users of the Parkin app to offset parking costs by making qualifying purchases at participating outlets, with the value credited back to their Parkin wallet. The campaign positions everyday parking as a point of interaction between drivers and nearby businesses.
In a city where 90% of residents rely on private vehicles, parking plays a role in determining where people stop and spend. While large retail destinations typically offer free parking, smaller neighbourhood businesses often depend on paid public parking nearby, where short visits can incur an additional cost.
“Spots for Shops” is designed to address that imbalance by introducing a system that links parking payments with retail transactions. Through the programme, drivers can park in any paid Parkin space near a participating business, pay the applicable parking fee, make a qualifying purchase based on a minimum spend set by the merchant, and have their parking validated via the Parkin app using their mobile number. Cashback is then credited instantly to the user’s Parkin wallet.
The campaign reframes routine purchases — such as a coffee, haircut, key duplication or a meal — as a mechanism to support small businesses, without requiring changes in consumer behaviour.
Osama AlSafi, Chief Operating Officer at Parkin, said the initiative reflects efforts to position parking as part of a broader urban ecosystem. “Small businesses play a vital role in Dubai’s economic landscape, and ‘Spots for Shops’ reflects how Parkin is reimagining parking as an enabler of urban mobility and local commerce,” he said. “By seamlessly connecting parking with everyday retail experiences, we are making it easier for customers to access neighbourhood destinations while supporting local businesses.”
The pilot phase will include 15 participating businesses, with parking redemption set to go live on the Parkin app in early May 2026. Participating outlets will provide cashback directly to customers while benefiting from increased visibility and footfall.
The campaign was developed in collaboration with FP7 McCANN, with production by No Garlic No Onions and public relations led by Burson.
Federico Fanti, Regional Chief Creative Officer at FP7 McCANN, said the idea was rooted in Dubai’s car-centric culture. “Dubai is a car-first city, so the parking spot became our canvas,” he said. “With ‘Spots for Shops’, we turned that routine moment into a direct connection between people and the businesses around them.”
As part of the campaign, designated parking spaces will also feature artwork and messaging, turning them into street-level media units aimed at directing drivers to nearby participating businesses.
