AI is becoming the newsroom’s second pair of hands across GCC and APAC

Artificial intelligence is rapidly finding its place inside newsrooms across Asia-Pacific and the Gulf, but the most significant change is not necessarily the replacement of journalists. It is the compression of the editorial cycle.

AI is increasingly being used for the parts of journalism that consume time without necessarily requiring the highest level of human judgement: searching and analysing documents, transcription, translation, copyediting, summarisation, headline generation, data analysis, verification, content repurposing and turning one piece of journalism into multiple formats.

That distinction matters. The emerging model is less “AI writes the news” and more “AI helps journalists get to the journalism faster”.

The scale of the change is captured by the Reuters Institute’s Journalism, Media and Technology Trends and Predictions 2025 report, based on a survey of 280 digital leaders in 51 countries. Eighty-seven per cent of respondents said generative AI was transforming their newsrooms, either completely or to some extent. Publishers identified improving efficiency and productivity as major benefits, while AI applications included newsgathering, translation, text-to-audio conversion and automated story summaries.

The Associated Press captures the philosophy increasingly being adopted by major news organisations: AI should support journalists rather than replace them. Its newsroom AI initiative says journalists continue to write the stories while AI-enabled systems handle preparation, coordination and monitoring tasks around the reporting process.

India: making journalists faster

In India, where large newsrooms produce enormous volumes of content across English and multiple Indian languages, the editorial applications are particularly significant.

AI can turn a 100-page government report into a searchable research document, identify recurring names and figures, transcribe an interview, translate material, summarise a long speech, compare two versions of a document or generate an initial set of headlines. The journalist still needs to check the material, establish context and make the editorial decision — but the first stage of the process can take minutes rather than hours.

This is particularly important for digital newsrooms working under relentless publication pressure.

The Reuters Institute has documented experimentation with AI among Indian publishers, including the use of AI-powered tools for fact-checking audio and video. The Quint, for example, has used AI-assisted fact-checking as part of its efforts to identify and assess misinformation.

But Indian publishers are also confronting the other side of the AI equation: whether technology companies should be able to absorb publishers’ journalism into AI systems without adequate attribution or compensation. At the India AI Impact Summit in February 2026, the Digital News Publishers Association argued that journalism should not be treated simply as free input for AI systems.

The implication is clear: Indian newsrooms are increasingly willing to use AI for editorial augmentation, but not necessarily willing to surrender editorial ownership.

Saudi Arabia: AI enters the editorial infrastructure

Saudi Arabia is moving particularly quickly.

At the Saudi Media Forum in February 2026, the Ministry of Media and the Saudi Data and AI Authority launched the Media Innovation Bootcamp and an AI Principles in Media document. The bootcamp is designed to train journalists and content creators in smart journalism tools, including automated data collection and deepfake detection. An AI-anchor track also explores multilingual broadcasting and real-time interaction.

The significance goes beyond experimentation with ChatGPT-style tools. Saudi Arabia is beginning to build AI into the country’s media infrastructure, with explicit attention to responsible use across the media lifecycle.

The Saudi Media Forum also focused on the relationship between journalists and AI, particularly the need for human oversight to control bias and protect credibility.

The applications are increasingly practical: extracting information from large datasets, summarising material, assisting research, detecting manipulated content and producing versions of content for different audiences.

Saudi Press Agency itself has described AI as transforming how news is gathered, created and distributed, while highlighting big-data analytics and machine learning as tools for understanding audience interests and tailoring content.

UAE: from experimentation to personalisation

The UAE is emerging as another major test bed for AI-enabled media.

Research published by the Al Jazeera Media Institute in January 2026 says organisations including Sky News Arabia and WAM, the Emirates News Agency, have already adopted AI-based systems for personalising content, supporting editorial tasks and optimising distribution. Al Jazeera itself has incorporated AI into areas including fact-checking and news production while investing in staff training.

Academic research published in Frontiers in Communication in August 2026 similarly found that AI is increasingly reshaping Arab journalism through automated production, audience analytics and multimedia tools. The researchers argue that AI can improve efficiency and data-driven journalism, but that linguistic complexity, uneven digital readiness and limited governance frameworks remain significant challenges in Arab media.

That linguistic question is especially important for the Gulf. Arabic is not simply another translation layer. Nuance, dialect, names, cultural references and political context can all affect whether an AI-generated or AI-translated piece is editorially usable.

A 2024 study of AI adoption in Arab newsrooms found that organisations in economically stronger markets, specifically highlighting the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, had moved beyond basic experimentation with generative AI and were adopting more sophisticated AI technologies.

APAC: the productivity argument meets the trust problem

Across APAC, the picture is more fragmented. AI adoption depends heavily on the size of the newsroom, language, resources and digital infrastructure.

The Pacific offers a particularly useful example. An ABC International Development report found that media practitioners across 12 Pacific countries were already experimenting with AI to aggregate, produce and present news. But journalists also raised concerns about AI’s ability to handle Pacific names and cultural nuances accurately.

That is the broader APAC challenge. The region contains some of the world’s most technologically advanced media markets alongside smaller and resource-constrained news ecosystems, while spanning hundreds of languages and cultures.

For all of them, however, the productivity proposition is similar.

AI can reduce the time spent listening to hours of recordings, searching mountains of documents, correcting copy, translating material or producing multiple versions of the same story. That time can then be redirected towards original reporting — finding sources, making calls, travelling, interviewing people and checking facts.

The risk is that speed becomes the objective rather than the by-product.

A recent study of Arab journalism makes the same point in a regional context: AI can enhance efficiency and data-driven journalism, but sustainable adoption requires human-centred governance, professional oversight and editorial accountability.

The newsroom of the near future therefore may not have fewer journalists. It may have journalists doing different things.

AI will increasingly perform the first pass: search, transcribe, summarise, translate, compare, organise and repurpose.

Humans will increasingly perform the parts that matter most to journalism: question, investigate, verify, contextualise, challenge and decide.

That could be the real AI revolution in media — not machines replacing editorial judgement, but machines removing enough of the mechanical work to give editorial judgement more time.
