LG’s rejection of claims that its televisions record ambient conversations does not end the debate. The controversy exposes a bigger question for the connected-TV industry: how much visibility should a television have into the digital life of a household?
LG says its TVs do not collect or record ambient conversations except when users activate voice functions. “Other than these instances, the TVs do not collect or record ambient conversations,” the company said in a statement shared with Communicate. It said voice data is processed only when the remote’s voice button is pressed and held, or when a wake word such as “Hi LG” is recognised after Far-Field voice recognition has been activated.
LG’s statement came after an investigation by technology YouTube channel Gamers Nexus, conducted with Level1Techs and security researchers, raised questions about the devices’ network scanning, microphone and content-recognition capabilities.
The investigation used tools including Wireshark to examine LG OLED televisions. Researchers said they observed TVs scanning local networks and identifying other devices, including phones and smartwatches, as well as gathering information about nearby Wi-Fi networks.
LG does not deny that its TVs can scan networks. Instead, it says the capability is necessary for features such as device connectivity, content sharing and smart-home functionality.
“Additionally, to provide smart TV functionalities, LG TVs feature the ability to scan for and connect to nearby devices on the same network,” LG said. The company described this as a standard function commonly found in smart TVs and smart-home devices.
That response shifts the debate from whether the capability exists to a more difficult question: what should consumers reasonably expect a television to do?
A modern smart TV needs to communicate with phones, streaming devices and other equipment. Network discovery can therefore have legitimate technical purposes. But there is a meaningful difference between connecting to a device when requested and discovering multiple devices across a household network.
The issue becomes more consequential because televisions have become part of the advertising ecosystem.
More than a screen
Connected TVs can generate information about viewing behaviour and interact with advertising platforms. LG Ad Solutions has marketed its ability to reach hundreds of millions of “addressable secondary devices” in the US.
Automatic Content Recognition, or ACR, is central to this model. LG says its ACR feature is opt-in and supports personalised recommendations, services and advertising. If users do not consent to the applicable optional agreement, LG says ACR data is not used for advertising purposes.
The important question, therefore, is not simply whether a TV collects data, but what data it collects, under what consent mechanism, for what purpose and where that data goes.
The microphone question
The most serious claim in the investigation concerns the microphone. Researchers said they were able to capture audio while an LG TV was apparently offline and suggested audio could be stored locally and potentially retrieved when connectivity was restored.
LG strongly disputes the broader implication.

That distinction is crucial. Demonstrating that a device can technically process or capture audio does not establish that LG routinely records conversations. But technical capability still matters because a connected television is now a computing device sitting inside one of the most private spaces in a person’s life.
The bigger issue
The controversy highlights how far the smart-TV industry has moved from the traditional television.
A TV can now discover devices, communicate with phones, identify content, process voice commands and participate in advertising systems. Yet most consumers still think of it primarily as a screen.
That creates a consent problem.
Privacy settings and opt-out mechanisms are meaningful only if consumers understand what they are agreeing to. Users should be able to know what their television can access, what remains on the device, what leaves the home and who receives that information.
For the advertising industry, this is equally important. The connected TV promises advertisers a richer understanding of households than traditional television ever could. But greater data collection also creates greater expectations around transparency and trust.
The LG dispute may therefore be less about whether one company is “spying” on consumers and more about a broader industry question:
