Twitter officially launches 280-character limit

In September, Twitter launched a test that expanded the 140-character limit to 280 characters. The test was met with mixed reactions – mostly negative, with many users expressing the need for an ‘edit’ option instead.

Twitter has now gone ahead and made it official.

The company says that while in the first few days of the test most people made use of all 280 characters, this pattern normalized soon. “We saw when people needed to use more than 140 characters, they tweeted more easily and more often. But importantly, people tweeted below 140 most of the time and the brevity of Twitter remained,” the company says in a statement.
